Hosting a Backyard Memorial Day Celebration

Memorial Day is not only a federal holiday in the United States, but it is a day of observance and remembrance of those who died in service. In June of 1968, Congress moved the official date of Memorial Day to the last Monday in May in order to create a 3-day weekend. Today, it has become more of a day we spend time with family and friends, while there is certainly an air of remembrance on Memorial Day. This day has also been unofficially marked as the start of summer with many schools finishing for the year around this time.

This Memorial Day weekend many people will take road trips to visit family members or head to the airport to kick-off a nice vacation get-away. But, there will also be plenty of folks having backyard gatherings and spending time with friends and family right at home. However you spend your Memorial Day weekend, there are a few things you can take care of to ensure your celebration is a success when hosting a backyard Memorial Day celebration.

Tips for Hosting a Backyard Memorial Day Celebration

  • Beverages – Refreshing beverages such as ice tea, lemonade, and fruit punch are a nice way to keep everyone’s thirst quenched. If you are serving alcohol, strawberry daiquiris, margarita’s and sangrias are great summer cocktails. Setting up drink stations works well along with coolers to keep drinks ice cold. Try to keep your coolers out of direct sunlight. Placing them under an awning will help extend the length of time your ice and drinks will stay nice and cool inside.
  • Food – Outdoor grilling is a national favorite. You can grill just about anything: hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken, brisket and more. You can also grill an assortment of vegetables for easy sides. Party trays work well for snacking such as cheese, olive, fresh fruit and veggie trays. When it comes serving a crowd, buffet-style is perhaps the easiest way. Another great tip is to keep a separate area for utensils, plates and napkins. This will keep the food line running more smoothly.
  • Keep Cool – Keeping everyone cool and comfortable can be a challenge during this time of year. Use any outdoor fans you may have available. Keep your guests covered with umbrella tables, awnings, and canopies if possible. Providing decorative paper fans is a nice touch and can also be given as party favors.

Our team at South Tampa Smiles wants everyone to enjoy this Memorial Day Weekend safely and comfortably. We hope you find our tips for hosting a backyard Memorial Day celebration helpful. Place your focus on creating memories with family members and friends while enjoying your favorite Memorial Day traditions.

Have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day from all of us at South Tampa Smiles!

Cinco De Mayo, May 5th, is a day of celebration that commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. Many people will be celebrating this holiday at their favorite Mexican restaurant with a salt-rimmed margarita, tortilla chips with salsa and a signature “spicy” Mexican dish. These fiery foods pack a powerful punch that can break you into a sweat. We can all agree that this food is appetizing and keeps us craving more, but we would like to open the discussion:

Is spicy food bad for your teeth?

Perhaps the most recognizable and distinctive ingredient in Mexican cuisine is the chili pepper. Chili peppers contain capsaicin, which help minimize infection and also believed to alleviate pain. Another commonly used ingredient to spice up a dish is onion. Onions are packed with manganese, which helps bind calcium to bones and teeth. There are a variety of chili spices that are often used to add some heat. Chili spices are loaded with vitamin A that promotes strong bones and teeth. Spicy foods also stimulate salivary production, which acts as a natural cleanser to wash away bacteria and debris.

Foods that are high in spice can actually have a positive effect on your teeth in moderation. Of course, too much of anything is never a good thing. Frequent consumption of chili peppers can be too acidic and cause erosion of enamel. Also, most of these zesty dishes are topped with a tangy squeeze of lime. Any citrus can be harsh on your teeth when consumed too frequently.

At South Tampa Smiles we believe that variety is the spice of life so celebrate and enjoy your favorite spicy foods in moderation. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and rinse the food particles and bacteria away. Maintain proper dental care at home, regular checkups and professional cleanings. Contact your South Tampa Dentist at (813) 289 – 0560 to make your next appointment and keep your smile in excellent health.

Valentine’s Day is the special day for everyone can spend time with our special someone or express love and appreciation to our loved ones and dearest friends. It is a time to enjoy a night at the movie, dinner at your favorite restaurant, or simply sharing a big box of chocolates. Many people like to show affection by gifting sugary treats to their loved ones. The South Tampa Smiles staff would like to spread awareness that everyone can celebrate the holiday in a healthier way by making dark chocolate your confection of choice.

Choosing Your Chocolate

Chocolate candy can be enjoyed in moderation without damaging the health of your teeth. Choosing dark chocolate is a great way to treat your self this Valentine’s Day without any feeling of guilt. Dark chocolate has some surprising health benefits. The antioxidants in dark chocolate are believed to be good for your heart and even lower blood pressure. It is also better for your teeth than some other sticky candies such as taffy or caramel. These types of candies are more likely to get stuck in between the teeth and put you at risk of developing cavities. When you choose your chocolate, try opting for the plain varieties. They do not contain the sticky ingredients that could get lodged in the crevices and remain on the teeth for a much longer period of time.

Enjoy in moderation

Most of us have the mindset of “save some for later” and continue nibbling on our chocolatey treats for several days. So instead of enjoying the candy for a brief time and brushing right away, we repeatedly expose our teeth to sugar. It is this constant exposure of sugar that damages the teeth rather than the amount. It is easy to make health conscious decisions for your sweetheart, friends, and loved ones. Offer them sweet indulgences that have hidden health benefits and less damaging to their oral health.

We encourage everyone to enjoy the sweeter things in life while maintaining long-lasting dental health. Keep your smiles in top health with regular dental visits along with your at-home routine.  Call us today at (813) 289 – 0560 to schedule your next dental exam, cleaning and x-rays.

Happy Valentine’s Day from South Tampa Smiles!

Most people will experience some sort of toothache pain at some point in their lives. Toothaches can range from mild pain that subsides quickly to more severe pain that lasts longer than just a few seconds. The most common cause of dental pain is dental decay, but certain symptoms can aid in pinpointing the exact cause of your toothache pain for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Pain While Eating

A toothache that arises from decay or a cracked tooth may cause pain or discomfort only while eating. It is important to have it checked and taken care of as soon as possible so the condition doesn’t worsen causing more discomfort and more extensive dental treatment.

Sharp, Shooting Toothache

This type of toothache pain typically comes from a cracked tooth, a cavity or an abscess. They usually occur in response to cold, hot or sweet foods and beverages. Another cause for this type of pain could be receding gums or loss of enamel due to age or brushing too hard.

Dull, Lingering Toothache

Tooth decay, trauma and nerve damage can all be the cause of chronic tooth pain. Grinding your teeth over long periods of time can also cause nerve damage over a long period of time.

Severe Throbbing Pain

Severe, throbbing toothaches are typically signs of infection or abscess and generally do not go away. If you are experiencing severe pain and swelling, see a dentist right away.

Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can arise from TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) disorders, wisdom teeth impaction, and grinding your teeth. Jaw pain can also be felt in the face, cheekbones, eyes and ears.

It is important to have any type of dental pain checked for proper diagnosis as some forms of pain mimic that of toothache or jaw pain. These non-dental related illnesses can range from sinusitis and ear infections to heart disease.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact South Tampa Smiles at (813) 289 – 0560 promptly. We are here to help.

At the beginning of every New Year, millions of people make resolutions to change things about themselves or improve the person that they were the year before. It can range from giving up cigarettes, to losing weight, or to saying you’ll try sky diving before the next year rolls around. At the center of all this, is the desire to feel better about yourself in some way. Being a dentist in south Tampa, we can’t really help you quit a habit, put down that extra donut, or provide you a perfectly good plane to jump out of, but we can make you feel better about yourself!

Think about it: what’s the first thing you do when you meet someone new? You smile at them! It’s a good way to make a good first impression. If you don’t feel totally confident in your smile, it can really take its toll on your self-confidence. Lucky for you, there are a ton of options to help improve an imperfect smile. In this blog we’ll discuss a few different options you have at you disposal.

Six Month Braces | 6 Month Smiles | Six Month Orthodontics:

case3

The above-mentioned 6 month braces procedures represent the same thing. The benefit of choosing this type over traditional, clunky braces is the fact that you can be showing off that perfect smile in as little as six months. This is compared to the 2+ years that other methods make you wait. Our highly experienced south Tampa cosmetic dentist and resident Smile Expert, Dr. Cannariato can work with you to achieve your dream smile in virtually no time.

This short turnaround time is attributed to the fact that Six Month Smiles focuses on straightening the teeth that show when you’re actually smiling. This is achieved by a combination of time-tested orthodontic techniques that includes the use of clear brackets and wires that are white-colored, which make them virtually undetectable – unlike the large, clunky metal braces of the past. These specific teeth are gently moved to their desired positions over time by the light force provided by the bracket and wires.

Smart Moves (Simple Tooth Movement):

jan2012-smartmoves-case1

Sometimes someone’s smile can be just about perfect except for one pesky tooth. Many of our cosmetic dentistry patients aren’t looking for complete orthodontic care, but instead are looking to simply move one tooth into the right position. This can be achieved through a procedure called Simple Tooth Movement. It can be likened to Invisalign, but a lower cost.

It uses a series of invisible retainers to straighten teeth without the need for those ugly metal brackets that can be used for run of the mill, unsightly braces. These retainers are developed in a special lab, which allows South Tampa Smiles to provide this procedure at a much better price point than Invisalign. Achieving your ideal smile could be done in a few short months and in the least invasive way possible.

If you’re interested in achieving the perfect look, you’ll definitely want to call 813-289-0560 to get in touch with our veteran South Tampa dental staff. We provide a friendly atmosphere and unmatchable service with great pricing, making us the Best South Tampa Dentist according to The South Tampa News Reader poll. You can also read our reviews on our Google+ page. Don’t delay; get your dream smile today!
